View the other drawings from week 5.
This week, I managed to arrive a bit early and to remember to pick up a drawing board. There were a few people not there which gave us a little more space to shift position to get a better view if necessary.
The model counted the two minutes in his head for the shortest poses. Most were very short two-minute periods. I think that one or two poses lasted only about 40 seconds. This is not at all a bad thing to warm up, to focus and coordinate eye, hand and mind. I did wonder if it might be a little too much of a challenge to the younger and less experienced members of our group. They seemed to cope well with it, however. I have attended life classes in the distant past where we did short bursts of 30-second or one-minute poses to warm up.
It was very warm in the studio. The weather outside had suddenly turned balmy and continued to be quite warm even into the early evening. This meant that the studio with heaters on was decidedly hot. Even our model was asking for a heater to be turned off.
Only one more week left. I think I need to find or buy some Conté sticks and charcoal for the last session. I would like to try some more tonal drawings for the longer poses. Doing so much precise image work on the computer during the past 10 years, I feel it’s more important to make the most of physical materials and the freedom of more gestural processes.
